In 1927, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the Barcelona Coffee Table for the Tugendhat House in Brno, Czech Republic. His approach to architecture and design was based on the philosophy of “no trivial decoration.” The Barcelona Coffee Table displays Mies van der Rohe’s keen awareness of proportion, detailing and craftsmanship. The base is constructed using a single piece of polished stainless steel, and incorporates Mies van der Rohe’s signature stylized cross form. The simplicity of the stainless steel base is complemented by the thick, clear tempered glass top. The Barcelona Coffee Table is often paired with the Pavilion Chair , simply for their stylistic similarities.
